Horse Landing

This event features the fort at the east end of a large battlefield. But for the second year the battles were fought over a "cardboard" town. Several town-like enclosures became the mock town of Baldwin, Florida and the 2 day scenario allowed for each side to charge across a heavy bridge and capture the town, delighting several thousand spectators each day. And along with magnificent air and ground pyrotechnics, at least one structure gets burned or blown to pieces as a casualty of war .

More than 700 hundred reenactors were present, many from the 2 largest Florida based, Confederate groups; Hardys' Brigade and The Department of the Gulf. Spectators and family members cheered the battles that included 45 cavalry and 12 artillery pieces. As usual the evening dance gathered 300 or more at any given time and lasted well into the night. Sunday morning was comfortably chilly for the Union and Confederate "Colors". In the Union camp Colors was followed by a lively "Pack Inspection" where contraband and frivolity was definitely the order of the day.

Large scale maneuvers are possible on this field and it is a wondrous sight to see several hundred Federals or Rebels advance in a line of battle amid booming cannon and popping pyro explosions. The mock town was not as substantial and believable as last year but there is no doubt that many hours of labor were expended by many people to erect the structures. The efforts of the event organizers and volunteers are undoubtedly appreciated by the reenactors and spectators and doubly so by this photographer. This is a great event to attend no matter which side of the line you are on.

My mpgs are usually 5 min or less and are shot with my older digital camera just for your enjoyment. They are usually, but not always, clips from the battle. To see all my mpgs and links to other reenactment movies go to my "mpgs" page.

Some of my mpgs use background music
from the 97th Regimental String Band.
