Anclote River Raid
April 14 + 15, 2007

The infernal Federal forces tramping through Alabama and Georgia have not caused any of our Florida citizens to abandon their beliefs that the northern aggression is inherently wrong. I have often thought that it mightabin only a few months before our southern brothers would whip the dastardly devils in blue that have crossed our innocent borders, harangued our oldest generations and stolen the very future from the youngest. Now that this horrendous affair hast dragged itself out longer than necessary, and while it has given me a principal vocation, I felt endeavored to visit the beleaguered west coast of our fair state.

Here in the middle part of our peninsula we have heard of many horrors that relate to the indiscriminate pillage, plunder and burning of the fine mills and industries around the Anclote River. I thought it my duty to look into the affairs and report to the various press of the truths therein. It is true that exaggerations have been made and stories have been embellished but I have now witnessed firsthand a small skirmish in the Anclote area that mightabin devastating if it weren't for the total absence of loot and plunderable materials that the Yankees thought were there.

Indeed the Yankees did come ashore and indeed they did strike the terrible outnumbered home guard with a viciousness not recorded in civilized times. Despite valiant resistance and courageous sacrifice by our boys - the infernal yanks bullied their way inward mile after mile looking for God-knows-what but only finding our local mosquitoes and palmetto bushes aplenty. Thankfully, soon after I arrived in the area, bad weather put paid to their bloody excursion and we were therefore saved by the Almighty and the nature that He commands. The Home Guard and I followed their retreat back along their torturous trail of destruction and can safely report that many of the stories we have heard tell are based in absolute truth and yet I can happily report that once again the yankees were chased back to their ships.

We can only wonder why His judgement falls so harsh on us when it was not we who started this war. I can only wonder for the safety of the souls who order this aggression to be executed. Sadly I made my way back into the interior of our state and my home fully convinced of the voracity of the stories that have been told before my journey.

Near New Port Richey, Florida - at the picturesque J B Starkey Park - the fourth annual Anclote River Raid was held on April 14th and 15th. Among the scrub pines and palmettos are the remains of a 19th century Florida "cracker" homestead once owned by James McNeill. He served as a confederate soldier from 1862 to 1865 in the Florida First Cavalry Regiment, Co. K and the Florida 9th Infantry Co. I. He fought at Richmond, Perryville, Chickamauga and Missionary Ridge and surrendered at Appomattox Courthouse along with General Lee on April 9th, 1865.

My mpgs are usually 5 min or less and are shot with my older digital camera just for your enjoyment. They are usually, but not always, clips from the battle. To see all my mpgs and links to other reenactment movies go to my "mpgs" page.

Some of my mpgs use background music
from the 97th Regimental String Band.
